Herbert Fried

Herbert Fried, age 96, of Shadehill, SD, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, December 3, 2025 at Aspen Grove Assisted Living - Hospice in Sturgis, SD.
Funeral services for Herb will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 19th, 2025 at the Grace Bible Fellowship Church in Bison, SD, with Pastor Phil Hahn officiating.   Burial will follow in the Bison Cemetery.  The funeral service will be livestreamed and link will be available on Herb’s obituary the day of the funeral.
Herbert J Fried “Herb” was born on April 28, 1929 at Shadehill, SD to Christopher and Emilia (Ackerman) Fried.  Herb was one of twelve children.  He grew up on the family farm and attended TJ Hooker school through 8th grade.
In 1948, Herb met and fell in love with Donna Stiles.  They were married on May 26, 1951 at Bison, SD.  Herb & Donna lived on the home place together for 59 years, until Donna’s passing to heaven.  Herb continued to live on the family farm until October 2016, when he suffered a stroke, which caused him to need care provided by an assisted living facility.  At that point, after living on the same farm for 87 years, Herb moved to Aspen Grove Assisted Living, in Sturgis, SD, where he resided for 9 years.  He was able to live in the same facility with 2 of his sisters-in-law (MaryEllen and Mildred Fried).  What a gift from God to have family in the same building!
Herb and Donna were the parents of three children; Nancy, Steven and Stanley.  Later God blessed them with five grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
Herb enjoyed hunting deer, antelope and pheasant, and often guided hunters to a creek or draw where he knew the wildlife would be.
Dad and Mom spent many evenings (especially in winter) playing Whist with the neighbors.  And if there was a high school basketball game in town, you would probably find them at the game.  There were many trips to the Mankato, Minnesota area to visit Donna’s family.  The trips were usually made in Mid-August - -sometime between finishing the wheat harvest and before corn chopping began.
Keeping Herb in their fondest memory are his three children and their spouses: Nancy and Danny Stetler, Lincoln, NE; Steven and Cora Fried, Rapid City, SD; Stanley and Cheryl Fried, Bison, SD; five grandchildren (and their spouses), Amanda and Tom Tetzlaff, Lincoln, NE; Staff Sergeant Jonathan and Tina Stetler, Grovetown, GA ; Brandon and Kristen Fried, Aberdeen, SD; Aaron and Kaitlin Fried, Olathe, KS; Bradley and Jessican Fried, Bison, SD; eighteen great grandchildren: Grant and Grace Tetzlaff; Jack, Oliver, Elliott, James and Emily Stetler; Logan, Lucas, Tyler and Ava Fried; Maliya, Dominic, and Arianna Fried; Laurynn and Adam Fried.  One sister, Lillian (Bob) Bohnet.
Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, two great granddaughters, Abigail Rose Fried, Katelynn Jayne Fried, 2 infant brothers, 5 sisters; Christine Fried, Dorothy Plocek, Betty Hoff, Bertha Cooper and Rith Friez; 3 brothers, Albert Fried, Ted Fried and Bert Fried.
Condolences may be sent and livestream of the funeral viewed at www.evansonjensenfuneralhome.com.
